Walnut Creek To Turn The Tables: Bermingham Jnr. by Julio Santarelli

 8/04/2010

Patrick Bermingham Jnr is confident Walnut Creek can turn the tables on the Peter Fernie-trained Matzumi in Saturday's Drop 5 Saves Lives Sprint (1300m) at Kalgoorlie.

The pair were involved in a titanic duel when they last met on March 30 in the Radio West Sprint before Matzumi held on to win from the fast-finishing Walnut Creek in an exciting conclusion to the race.

There was little that separated the runners on that occasion and there will be little that separates them in their rematch but Birmingham believes he can reverse the result and exact sweet revenge.

"It was a great race and a great effort from Walnut Creek who did everything but win the race," Bermingham said.

"I'm confident we can turn the tables.

"He will derive great benefit from his first up effort and will appreciate racing over his favoured distance of 1300 metres."

Stablemate Running Mist has drawn wide in the Safe Cars Saves Lives Handicap (1100m) but it won't bother the four-year-old who is a speed machine out of the gates.

He jumped and led early at his first-up run a fortnight ago as he attempted to lead all the way before tiring over the concluding stages and finishing a brave second to Never The Twain.

"I think the jockey went a bit early which may have cost him the race," Bermingham said.

"It was a super run nevertheless and I'm expecting further improvement tomorrow and think he will be very hard to beat.

"He is still learning the caper and has yet to put it all together on race day.

"For a $5,000 investment he has been a wonderful pickup for the stable."

Bermingham is excited by the return of Infinite Star in the Drive Safe Ride Safe Handicap (1200m).

The four-year-old mare enjoyed a successful end to her last campaign with two wins and two placings from five starts and looked impressive in winning a barrier trial two weeks back.

Bermingham is anticipating a successful 2010 season for the four-year-old mare.

"I'm quite excited by what she has to offer," Bermingham said.

"She really sprouted wings towards the end of her last campaign and her trial win recently was impressive.

"Link Robertson gave a positive report.

"And her work during the week has been the best ever so I go into the race with confidence."
