Course Specialist by The Hurkha

 13/04/2010

It was great to have course specialist Saffron Fire back at the local course and boosting her record of wins on the track to 11, with another all of the way victory.

Her win was the second of three wins for trainer Peter Fernie who would later saddle Verster to his second win of the season in the next race.

Saffron Fire is a rising seven year old who just loves the tricky local circuit. Brett Mathews had no hesitation in sending Saffron Fire to the lead and may have even under ridden the winner, recording the win in 1.18.17

"Normally she gets them off the bit chasing but because there wasn't any pressure she got away with plenty." Fernie said "She loves the local circuit and grows a leg up here."

"That was only her third win for me from about six starts and we will find another race for her on ANZAC Day."

Saffron Fire's win was also a riding double for heavy weight jockey Brett Mathews who has started the season off in fine fashion.

"Brett has got his weight under control and is working hard for the stable. He is one of the best local jockeys up here and is a big plus for my operation."

Winning Owner

Well known Perth businessman Emille Panossian from Sun Block Blinds continued his love affair with the KBRC, when Verster won his second race of the season.

Another of the Fernie trained gallopers to win on the day, Verster sat back off the leaders and descended for an effortless victory.

"Hopefully I have found the secret to this bloke. I keep him nice and fresh and he only had a saddle on him once for the week." Fernie said.

Panossian an ex apprentice jockey many years ago, has risen through the business ranks in Perth and his business is a leader in its field.

His blue and light blue colours have been carried to success in Kalgoorlie in the past by Campbell's Chariot and Verster looks assured of future wins.

"With the stake money available in Kalgoorlie it is the logical place to race your horses if they are not up to city class.
