Gold Commodity Sold Last Sunday

 20/04/2010

Last start Ascot winner Gold Commodity fetched $50,000 in the Magic Millions clearance sale at Belmont Park on Sunday.

Paul Smythe had trained the strapping son of Laranto to win twice at Kalgoorlie this year before his brilliant Ascot win last Saturday.

Leading Goldfields jockey Russell Hanson maintained his impressive strike rate when he rides in the city with a faultless display on the gelding.

Hanson positioned Gold Commodity just behind the leader Honour Of Denmark and switched around his heels on straightening and ground away for a courageous win.

"I love coming to Perth and riding winners. It just reminds the locals that we know what we are doing back home. This horse is flying at the moment and he has a few more wins in store that is for sure!" A beaming Hanson told The Gurkha post race.

Smythe attempted to purchase Gold Commodity but the bidding was too strong and well known bloodstock agent John Chalmers secured the gelding for $50,000.

There was a big crowd of Kalgoorlie people on course at Ascot on Saturday for ladies day and they lined the fence and gave Gold Commodity, Hanson and Smythe a rollicking reception when they returned to scale.

The Peter Fernie trained Black George also competed in the same race and after racing in the breeze outside of the leader, compounded over the final 1`00 metres to finish in sixth position, two and a half lengths from the winner.

"He was a little under done. From his barrier he had to work a little harder then we thought and he pulled up a bit big." Fernie said "He will start at Belmont Park on May 1 in a 74 rated 1000 metre event."
