Never The Twain contests the RSL/Legacy Sprint on Sunday by Julio Santarelli

 22/04/2010

The rejuvenation of Never The Twain can continue on Sunday when he contests the RSL/Legacy Sprint (1200m) at Kalgoorlie.

The Aaron Bazeley-trained galloper has returned a different horse this campaign and is thriving in the early part of the season with two impressive unbeaten performances.

He led from barrier to post to defeat Bull Durham first up on March 20 before sitting off the pace and chasing home hard to get over the top of Running Mist on March 30.

Misty Bazeley should be able to put him in a gun position from barrier three and with several of his fancied rivals drawn wide and potentially asked to do work early he could be the horse that runs home powerfully.

Peter Fernie will play a major hand in the race with three prospects: Saffron Fire, Red Fish Blue Fish and Matzumi.

Saffron Fire appreciated being back on her home track after three unplaced runs at Ascot and proved far too powerful in her return.

She stormed out of the gates early to dictate term in front and despite Walnut Creek and Matzumi trying hard over the final 200 metres she had too much in reserve and went to the line clearing away.

Red Fish Blue Fish returned from a spell with a third placing and will obviously benefit from the run.

She led the field up and attempted to pinch a break approaching the home turn but ran out of gas over the final 100 metres.

One point to keep in mind with this Blackfriars mare is her outstanding second up record of four wins from five starts and her impeccable form at the track last season that included four wins and one second placing from five runs.

With a win and a third placing from two starts this preparation Matzumi cannot be left out of calculations.

The Royal Academy gelding, a former Queensland galloper, had a disappointing 2009 season with five unplaced runs but has returned to the type of form he displayed earlier in his career.

It appears Fernie has found the key to him and from barrier four he is drawn to get the run of the race.

Fernie has also been instrumental in reigniting the career of Stormy Son gelding Sonny Biscay.

The three-year-old blitzed his rivals by more than five lengths last start and was equally impressive the run prior before being unfortunately disqualified.

He should be unbeaten this campaign but will be two from three after contesting the Hardy Spicer Handicap (1200m).
