Matzumi Home In A Legacy Thriller by the Gurkha

 27/04/2010

Matzumi Home In A Legacy Thriller Sunday's time honoured RSL/Legacy Sprint the main event on the ANZAC Day program, proved to be the highlight of a great days racing with the vastly improved Matzumi prevailing in a desperate finish.

Campbell McCallum steered the Royal Academy gelding between runners and he had a neck to spare on the line from the fast finishing Yes We Can with Red Fish Blue Fish and Walnut Creek deadheating for third and Power Torque only a length back in fifth.

The win by Matzumi continued his amazing form turn around this season from a struggling Queensland import last year to become one of the best open class sprinters in the region.

His three starts this season have yielded two wins and a third-not bad for a horse that raced four times last season, failing to run a place.

"We took him to Murdoch veterinary hospital last year and also made some gear changes and everything seems to have worked." His trainer Peter Fernie said.

The second placed Yes We Can was the run of the race, rocketing home from midfield to be over powering the winner on the line and this Paul Smythe trained mare looks to have her hoof right on the till.

"She has got her fair share of issues and we are working our way through them at the moment and judging by that run we are making progress." Paul Smythe told the Gurkha.

Next in were Red Fish Blue Fish who led and was headed by Walnut Creek before fighting back to gain a share of third place.

"She showed a lot of fight to come back after being clearly headed by Walnut Creek and I was very happy with her effort." Fernie added.

Walnut Creek continues to race consistently this year, registering three placings in top company and this Patrick Birmingham trained gelding continues to pay the bills for his connections.

The fifth placed Power Torque was also an eye-catching run and Susannah Hoppman has this gelding ready to win shortly.
