Kalgoorlie has long been regarded as the best training ground for budding apprentices in the state and on Sunday race goers were treated to more then a glimpse of the future, with the claimers winning six of the seven events. In fact, if Jamie Morgan had lasted to win on Cool Euro in race three the entire card would have fallen to racings younger brigade. Andrew Castle rode his first winner for the season, darting Cyclonic Force home between runners to salute at big odds for Esperance trainer Tracey Frizzle. Castle was originally apprenticed to Lou Luciani at Ascot but has since had his indentures transferred to David Harrison at Serpentine. The win was the promising apprentice's 35th career victory and he looks destined to be a leading jockey of the future. Ned Colbeck continues to impress, riding Arachnid to his second win in a row and the apprentice's fourth Goldfields win of the season. Arachnid had to contend with a wide barrier but Colbeck had him quickly across, racing just outside of the speed and from there the Ashley Grace trained gelding fought off all challenges to win impressively. Campbell McCallum well known in Kalgoorlie for his riding skills led the way with a double, saluting on Two Strong Hearts a surprise leader in the opening race of the day and later on Matzumi in the Legacy Sprint. Kevin Bohorun also continued his strong form this year riding a double for his master Peter Fernie who has trained nine winners this season. Bohorun came with a well timed run to break the maiden status of Hussonina and delivered in the final race of the day aboard Fer A Cheval who broke a losing sequence of 19 since arriving at the Fernie stables from Melbourne three years ago. |
