The form of Kalgoorlie trained gallopers held up strongly over the weekend in the Metropolitan area, with Black George and Verster both finishing second at Belmont Park and Northam respectively. Black George just failed to run down See A Victory in the second race of the day at Belmont Park with the Peter Fernie trained gelding finding the 1000 metres a tad too short. The nuggetty son of Blackfriars out of the former top race mare Bumbelina tried hard to catch See A Victory but couldn't bridge the advantage the winner held throughout the race. "He is getting fitter now and an increase in distance should be perfect for him next start." Fernie told The Gurkha post race. At Northam on Sunday, Verster a winner at his past two Kalgoorlie starts looked like making it a hat-trick of wins, before being caught on the line by the William Pike ridden Classofherown. Kalgoorlie jockey Brett Mathews rode Verster perfectly tracking the leader before racing to the lead and only being run down on the line by a head. "Verster is racing at the top of his game. He probably hit the lead a bit too early and wanted to have a look around but there was nothing Brett could do about that." "A neck and head can really make a difference in racing." Classofherown is a top class race horse and to concede 2 kg to her and lose by a head was a mighty effort. Stephen Rowe the trainer of Classofherown is the new trainer for former classy Goldfields gelding Hoodlum Gang, who stormed home to finish third behind Proud Falcon in the last race of the day at Belmont Park on Saturday. Stephen Mulchay the former trainer of Hoodlum Gang is still in the ownership of this powerful galloper and a city win looks on the cards. Hoodlum Gang has started five times for Rowe in the city for a second and a third at his past two runs and he has his hoof firmly on the till.
