Talented apprentice Jamie Morgan is getting close to that elusive first winner for the season, judging by her recent rides for her Goldfields co-master Paul Smythe. Morgan gave Cool Euro a gun ride, only to be claimed late by the stable mate Class To Go in a maiden race last meeting and later on the program finished third on Corolla for Susannah Hoppman. The mature aged apprentice can go to scale at 52 kg and has shown perseverance to continue her riding career after previously deciding to take a break from the industry. "Jamie is riding really well and her first win this time back will not be far away." Her master Qouna Cooke told the Gurkha. "She is on loan for the Kalgoorlie season to Paul Smythe and Paul has told me she has won the respect of the Goldfields racing industry." "Her riding has improved drastically this time and she is getting good support at the track from the local trainers." Morgan was originally a strapper for Paddy Bermingham before deciding on an apprenticeship with Roberts Mathews in the Swan Valley. She rode a Broome season with Dave Casey and then personal reasons caused her to take a break from the sport. Her love for the horses was too strong and she commenced riding track work for Cooke before deciding on a come back. "Jamie was able to complete about 24 trial rides in a couple of months over the summer which is a big effort for an apprentice. That amount of rides would normally take a year but some of the city trainer's got right behind, Neville Parnham in particular." "Paul Smythe was happy to employ her in Kalgoorlie for the season and she continues to impress with her work ethic and maturity."
