“And Damian Lane is going to have to work some magic as they corner…” Echoed Richard Bells broadcast as the field swung for home in the Tyrepower Handicap on Sunday. Lane had found himself back in the field aboard the favourite Ain’t No Saint with a wall of runners in front of him. With the patience of a much senior rider, Lane didn’t panic, hardly changing course before pushing Ain’t No Saint through a narrow gap and then driving the Merv Dellar trained gelding to a slender victory. The win by Ain’t No Saint was one of four winners the gun apprentice rode on Sunday and mirrored his quartet of winners at the local course last week. Lane’s dominant form has seen him take a one win lead in both the Jockey of the Year and the Scimitar Services Apprentice of the Year awards with nine wins, from Campbell McCallum who rode one winner on Sunday (The Unforgiven). It was the manner in which Lane rode that was even more impressive then his statistics show-racing outside of the leader with the first winner Villazon, leading most of the way on Yes We Can, plotting a path through the field on Ain’t No Saint and descending down the outside of the field on Simplirressitible. He was also narrowly denied on Walkonthewildside in race two and Corolla in the last race of the day. With a bit of luck “The Gurkha” could have been writing about a Frankie Dettori type performance in reference to the champion jockey’s “magnificent seven” at Royal Ascot in 1996. With leading trainers Susannah Hoppman, Paul Smythe and others all keen to enlist Lane to ride their horses, expect more winners to continue to roll in this season. |
