Brett Mathews celebrated his fifth win of the current season with an excellent ride on Topman to win the Tower Hotel Maiden (1616 metres). The talented Mathews allowed Topman to hold his position in the middle of the field and at the 400 metres eased into the moving line to track Caesars Symbol into the race. Instead of switching wide on the home bend the cool Mathews simply followed Caesars Symbol through, before switching into clear air with the minimum of time remaining and the driving the gelding to the line. The experience and strength of Mathews was obvious with the jockey using his legs and vigour with the whip to guarantee that Topman found the line. Mathews broke a surprising losing sequence on the local track of 22 rides with his last winner on Saffron Fire dating back to April 10. |
