City Watch by The Gurkha

 2/06/2010

Classy mare Simplyirresistible produced one of the performances of the day to win the final event at Belmont Park last Saturday.

The Susannah Hoppman trained mare finished fast from last on the home bend to scythe her way through a capacity to field to win in outstanding fashion.

Cliff Smith the partner of Hoppman was on hand to saddle up the mare in her final run for the Hoppman stable.

“It is a pity Sue couldn’t be here today.” An emotional Smith told the Gurkha post race. “She has a big team of runners she has to prepare for Kalgoorlie on Sunday.”

“She really did deserve to be here to enjoy her first city winner as a trainer.” Smith added.

Simplyirresistible has been in irresistible form on the Goldfields but the Perth punters largely ignored her and she started at the luxury odds of $8.80.

Damien Lane again showed that patience is a virtue by biding his time and allowing Simplyirresistible to race in her usual pattern, before picking runs off one by one in the straight and racing to the lead at the 100 metres.

“She actually holds her sprint for longer then it looks. The other horses came at her with 100 metres to go but she dug deep.”

“Simplyirresistible will now stay in Perth and enter the Jimmy Taylor stable for her future racing.” Smith said.
