The Paul Smythe trained mare Yes We Can put her best performance for the season on show, with an effortless victory in the Goldfields Electrical Contracting Handicap (1600 metres). The five year old daughter of Al Akbar, notched up her eighth career win from 23 starts by disposing of the second favourite Two Strong Hearts with a minimum of fuss, scoring by two lengths for Damian Lane. Yes We Can has started eight times this season but it has only been her past three starts that have indicated she was getting back to her best form. Last season Yes We Can loomed as one of the major local players during the Race Round when she led and finished a courageous fourth to Reverend Lovejoy in the Coolgardie Cup. She then had no luck in the Boulder Cup before being over the top in the Kalgoorlie Cup. “It looks like the mile might be her go.” Paul Smythe told the Gurkha. “I really thought her previous win was superior to this one.” “At the weights she was always going to be hard to beat.” “The Coolgardie Cup could be her major goal this season but I am tempted to try and win a race in town with her as well.” “She will go three weeks into the City of Kalgoorie-Boulder's Mayoral Cup (1400 metres) and then it is a case of managing her leading into the Race Round.” Yes We Can tracked her major rival Two Strong Hearts throughout the race and blew him away while conceding the runner-up 2.5 kg at the weights.
