Russell Hanson filled up over the long weekend, bouncing back to his best with six winners at both Kalgoorlie and Leonora. Hanson has been playing second fiddle to the two young hot-shots Damian Lane and Campbell McCallum but the veteran rider showed he is still a force to be reckoned with on the Goldfields. Hanson fired into the bridle with a treble at Leonora on Saturday; he then backed that feat up with a double at Kalgoorlie on Sunday, before finishing off the long weekend with another winner on Monday back at Leonora. Hanson combined with Susannah Hoppmann to score a brace of wins with Cherily, all of the way winner of the Morgan and Kelly Families Maiden and Universal Reigns who held out the stable mate Battle Scene in the Floyd-Gibbens Routledge Memorial Sprint. Hanson has now ridden 10 winners in Kalgoorlie and has moved into a clear second position on the awards table behind Lane (11 wins) and one in front of McCallum (9).
