Three For Fernie Increases Award Lead by The Gurkha

 16/06/2010

Leading trainer Peter Fernie opened up a commanding lead on the Office National Trainers award table, when he prepared three winners on Sunday with his two major rivals Susannah Hoppmann and Paul Smythe ending the day winless.

Fernie’s big day out, increases his lead to five over Hoppmann on 13 wins, with Paul Smythe back on nine winners for the year.

The day started well for the famous Cambana Lodge stable with black booker Zedream racing up to her impressive last start fourth to Universal Reigns, recording a comprehensive victory for red-hot apprentice Kyra Yuill.

Zedream was held up for the last crack at them and let down with her trade mark finishing burst to defeat Underline and Battle Scene.

“That was a brilliant ride. She rode Zedream to the letter of the instructions given to her pre race.” Fernie told the Gurkha

“The weight swing after the claim really helped as she is not overly big. That was her fourth career victory at 1100 metres.”

The second of the day’s winners for Fernie was the ultra impressive three year old Danterina, a dominant winner of the Cartelec Handicap.

“Both of my three year old winners are going enormously well.” Fernie said with regard to his third winner Sonny Biscay as well. “Danterina looks to be a smart little horse for Andrew Inglis and some good judges thought her form warranted a start in the city.”

“Sonny Biscay is as tough as they come and continues to thrive with his racing up here on the Goldfields.”

“He just takes each race as it comes and goes home and puts more weight back on. There looks to be plenty of upside for both of these horses.”

Fernie utilized the three kilogram claim of former stable apprentice Kevin Bohorun on both three year old winners, but the young apprentice has returned to the city stables of Lou Luciani.

“Young Kevin is going along nicely and I think will make the grade as an apprentice jockey.”
