Brown Brothers Hitting The Mark by the Gurkha

 22/06/2010

The sibling combination of Rickie and Rod Brown hit top form on Sunday, winning two races and just falling short in another event.

Rickie got the ball rolling with a surprise win when Trentan Dior stormed home along the inside to claim Amelia Storm right on the post to score in the Goldfields Laundry Handicap (1300 metres).

Young apprentice Munusamy Ganesh made the most of the cutaway rail to drive Trentan Dior home and the advantage of his 4 kg claim made the difference.

Ganesh was at it again in the last race of the day, following the cutaway home to drive Scenic Pursuit to the line to defeat Productivity by a half head to win the Hoop’s Plumbing and Gas Handicap (1300 metres).

“They were both intelligent rides form young Ganesh. He used the cutaway rail perfectly on Sunday and with his claim of 4 kg, it was very handy.” Rod Brown told the Gurkha.

“Frank Maynard left Scenic Pursuit up here after his run last week and Ganesh knows the horse well, being formerly apprenticed to Frank.”

“The horse has done really well up here and has not left an oat since he arrived. We will just work through the classes with him and hopefully there are some more wins left in store.”

Brown who also serves on the KBRC Committee has been enjoying a stellar start to this season and revealed that his smart maiden winner Kalarena has been put on the easy list for the time being.

“He was just starting to show signs that he was ready for a bit of a break. His past two runs have been from wide barriers, so we’ll just be patient with him and hopefully reap the rewards down the track.”

Rod Brown travelled to Leinster on Saturday and won a race with I’M A Toff who was also ridden by Ganesh.

“Frank Maynard paid a bit of money for this fellow and thought he could win a Railway Stakes. That didn’t work out but maybe he is starting to come good. He certainly won well on Saturday.”

Punters should keep an eye on the Rod Brown stable in the next month with the hard working trainer preparing to start some promising unraced three year olds.

“I have got a couple that have been going good at the trials and they should pay there way in the coming weeks.”

On brother Rickie’s success since he made his comeback to Goldfields training this year, Rod commented “Trentan Dior has always shown plenty of ability. They were offered some big money for the horse when it was trained in Perth by John Price.”

“The claim and the ride made the difference on Sunday. Barkida is Rickies three year old and he continues to race well too.”

“It is good to have him around the place and together we are enjoying a great start to the season.”
