This years crop of Goldfields trained three year olds continue to impress with their performances and Sonny Biscay was no exception on Sunday with a brilliant all of the way win in the GWN Deal or No Deal Handicap (1300 metres).
Munusamy Ganesh had no hesitation in allowing the Stormy's Son gelding to assume the role as pacemaker and then didn't hold back through the middle stages of the race, clearing out to lead by four lengths and then maintaining that advantage to the winning post.
Sonny Biscay recorded 1.17.90 for the 1300 metres which was clearly faster then the time recoded by the other two winners over the same distance, Toronto 1.19.77 and Intimidator 1.19.11.
Peter Fernie has achieved remarkable results with Sonny Biscay this season, starting the three year old eight times for three wins, three placings and a disqualification after jockey Richard Rhodes weighed in light following an easy 2 ¼ length maiden win.
Sonny Biscay was formerly trained in Perth by Todd Harvey and was bred by Perth Racing Vice Chairman Lex Piper, being out of one of his favourite brood mares Bonny Guest (What A Guest IRE).
Bonny Guest was the dam of the famous Piper-Metal Storm double act of Kentiara (Listed York Stakes, Detonator Stakes) and Kalatiara (Group 2 WA Guineas and the Listed Burgess Queen).
She was also the dam of full sister Antique (Stakes placed 3rd VRC Oaks, Eliza Park) who is the mother of Broadway Belle, Antique Rose and Arcadia.
"He will probably only have two more runs and then we will put him away for a long spell and he might just come back a really nice horse." Trainer Peter Fernie said.
Sonny Biscay is raced on lease by Kevin Luby, Dr Brent Hunt, Neil Gill and Lee Hill and looks destined to mature into a horse capable of winning in the metropolitan area.
