Apprentice jockeys dominated Sundays KBRC meeting with seven of the eight races falling to the juniors with Russell Hanson the only senior rider to win a race on the day. Kyra Yuill was the star booting home three winners to go with her double last Sunday, which rocketed the talented young apprentice to within four wins of Damian Lane (14) in the Scimitar Services Apprentice of the Year Award. Yuill won on Walnut Creek in the day’s opener for Patrick Bermingham, Menuhin for Gary Bowen and Lotta Biz for new trainer Stephen Miller. Munusamy Ganesh continued the good from of the Rod Brown stable this season, winning on smart three year old Secret Prince and then repeating the dose in the last race of the day for his new master, Peter Fernie on Lap Of Honor. Damian Lane returned to the winners list in Kalgoorlie after missing out last week to ride his 14th winner of the season on Show Pony for Stephen Miller in race two. And Duncan Miller also enjoyed his first success of the season in Kalgoorlie when successful on Em Gee Brown for his father Stephen. The training hat trick was the first in the career of former top jockey Stephen Miller and sets the talented horseman up for a big finish to the 2010 season. Hanson won his race with a masterful ride to get Jest On Time home in the first leg of the quaddie for Sue Hoppmann. Yuill will have the opportunity to reel in what looked to be an unassailable lead in the Apprentices Award and when one considers she was only narrowly pipped on Zedream in race four, that margin could even be smaller. It was great to see Duncan Miller back in the winners list on Sunday aboard Em Gee Brown and that win followed his victory on Brave Knight at Belmont Park one day earlier. There is no doubting the ability of young Duncan, he now has to grasp the moment and dominate racing in this state like an apprentice jockey with his ability should. Ganesh looks to be an exciting talent who is progressing very quickly this season on the old course. Many a gun apprentice has learned the “Kalgoorlie” way and judging by the feedback from trainers if Ganesh continues to improve, he will have a bright future in the saddle. The winners have dried up for Damian Lane since he lost his claim in Kalgoorlie but the gifted apprentice continues to ride the local track in wonderful form and trainers will no doubt continue to “put him on”. The likes of Kevin Bohorun, Andrew Castle and Nadia Bishop continue to ride well and provide good back–up to the leading group of riders in the region
