Sonny Biscay contest Westspeed Handicap (1200) in Perth by Julio Santarelli

 18/07/2010

Outstanding three-year-old galloper Sonny Biscay will return to Perth on Saturday to contest the Westspeed Handicap (1200m) at Belmont Park.
It will be his first appearance in town since a seventh placing to Avonmore Terrace at Ascot last March when under the care of Todd Harvey.
There is no question Sonny Biscay deserves to test his form against city class opposition based on the exploits he has displayed in Kalgoorlie this campaign.
Peter Fernie has him racing in career-best form with four wins and three placings from eight starts and a disqualification after jockey Richard Rhodes weighed in light following an easy 2 ¼ length maiden win.
He is the current leader in the Dr Brent Hunt Horse of the Year Award with 21 points and four clear of the Paul Smythe-trained Yes We Can.
If he races to his best form he will play a major role in Saturday’s race but it won’t be an easy task against a field that has some depth.
Hallowell Express ran an eye-catching race on his return two weeks back and does have a good second up record to his credit.
The Entourage has been a wonderful money earner for connections with three wins and eight placings from 16 starts and produced a tough and gutsy win over Blacksmith last week.
The Flying Spur three-year-old never runs a bad race and will be in a prominent position for a long way.
Zester is another consistent galloper with one win and four placings from seven career starts and produced a slashing first up run last week behind the Entourage and Blacksmith.
He was doing his best work late and ran the fastest sectional of the race.
And the Lou Luciani-trained Terada hasn’t missed the money in three starts back this preparation and is capable of winning without surprising.
Fernie will be back at Kalgoorlie on Sunday and keen to extend his lead on the trainer’s premiership table; he currently leads on 24 wins with Sue Hoppmann next on 16.
Rocliffe, Wocket In A Pocket and Zedream all look winning chances for the stable.
Hoppmann can add to her tally with Sword Master in the Apex Drilling Handicap (1400m).
The Second Empire gelding has struck form with a win and two placings from his past three starts and with the services of Russell Hanson and from barrier three he could prove hard to hold out.
