The much awaited return to the track of strapping three year old Kalarena was without doubt the Win of the Day in the Golden City Holden Handicap (1200 metres). Rod Brown turned the gelding out nice and fresh after a planned six week absence from the track and he didn't disappoint his followers. Richard Rhodes was forced to cover extra ground on Kalarena from his wide barrier but that or his massive weight of 58 kg didn't hinder the son of Arena. "He is such a big horse the weight doesn't seem to worry him." Rod Brown said after his win. "I decided to back off him after his last win because he was just showing signs of getting a bit tired." "We took it easy on him for three weeks and he appreciated the respite." Kalarena was far too strong for his rivals, defeating the smart Petit Maison on the line by half a length after conceding the runner-up 5.5 kg. Toronto another talented rival was back in third place in a photo with Petit Maison for the minor prizes. "We are looking at a race in Perth on August 7 over 1400 metres. The KBRC team will be in Perth for the Race Round promotion so it all works in well." Brown a Committeeman with the KBRC noted. "I think he is up to that class but only time will tell." Brown purchased Kalarena at the 2007 Magic Millions Premier Sale for $16,000 and the son of Arena looks set to be a bargain-basement purchase that keeps the ordinary people interested in racing. "We were advised to be patient with him because of his size and that advice was certainly correct." "There has been a few offers for him but none of them have been anywhere near the mark. Good horses are few and far between and even though he didn't cost much, we have put a lot of time and money into the big fella so it would have to be a big offer to turn our heads!" Kalarena stands a whopping 17.2 hands high and weighs in at the scales at 580 kg. "He was bucking his brands off when he returned to the stables after the race on Sunday and he should be spot-on for the 1400 metres at Belmont Park." |
