Young apprentice Andrew Castle claims this week's top ride with a brilliant come from behind display aboard the Tracey Frizzel trained Cyclonic Force to win the Golden City Mazda Handicap (1616 metres). Castle was content to sit back in the field from his wide draw and with plenty of pace up front, bided his time until the field raced down the Charles Street side of the track. At the 600 metres, Cyclonic Force was at least 12 lengths from the leaders but at that point Castle decided the time was right to commence his move. Cyclonic Force quickly tracked around the outside of runners and on the point of the turn, Castle made his race winning move, cleverly tracking back inside two of the wider runners to come with a well timed burst to defeat Class To Go and Menuhin running on well for third place. Castle was around the money all day, riding five thirds and a winner from six rides and continues to develop into one of the leading apprentice jockeys in the state. A special mention must go to Misty Bazeley for her ride on Midnight Train in the Stayers Final. Her decision to hand up the lead to Lord Airlie before attacking that galloper on straightening, showed her understanding of the gelding and she continues to ride in career best form this season. Award Watch It was a quiet day on the Western Front with only Peter Fernie and Aaron Bazeley training winners from the top four leading trainers. Fernie 26 wins for the year is well clear of Sue Hoppmann (18), Paul Smythe The riding honours were also spread thin with no jockey landing in the multiple wins column. Russell Hanson (18) holds his three win advantage in the Kleen West Distributors/ Surekleen Products Jockey of the Year Award from Damian Lane (14), Kyra Yuill (10) and Campbell McCallum (9). Lane, Yuill and McCallum make up the first three in the Scimitar Services Apprentice of the Year, with Kevin Bohorun closing into fourth with 8 wins for the year. Sonny Biscay (21) in clinging to a one point lead over Two Strong Hearts The winners were decided in the Golden City Motors Stayers Series with Midnight Train clinching the series leading horse award. Paul Smythe was also a clear winner in the trainers section and Kyra Yuill narrowly won the leading Jockey from Misty Bazeley. |
