A Home for Goldfields Racing History
After many years without a permanent home, the KBRC has brought together its most treasured historical items in a dedicated space - the Signpost Racing Museum.
Originally inspired by Signpost’s historic Triple Crown win in 1993, owners David Reed, Keith Biggs, Dick Austin and John Sarre donated $10,000 toward the creation of a racing museum.
The western end of the restored and renovated Old Tote now houses a secure, purpose-built display area that showcases more than a century of Goldfields racing history. It’s a space that honours the past, celebrates the legends and preserves the stories that shaped racing in the region.
Explore The Collection
The Australian Turf Register
One of the museum’s greatest treasures is a near complete collection of the Australian Turf Register, spanning the 1860s through to 1950. From all accounts, it is a unique collection in Australia.
The museum also houses rare studbooks, early racing calendars from multiple States, and a wide range of thoroughbred publications from the late 1800s and early 1900s - a remarkable record of the sport’s early days.
Step Back in Time
A stroll through the museum takes you deep into the history of Goldfields racing. Each display cabinet opens a window to another era, featuring:
Old race books, enclosure passes, licences and entrance tickets from the early 1900s
Rare medical and first-aid equipment used on course in the early days
Meticulously handwritten committee minutes and accounting ledgers
Clerk of Scales registers and other administrative records
Trophies, memorabilia and artefacts from the region’s famous races
The walls are lined with magnificent photographs - champion horses, big crowds, race day characters and the vibrant atmosphere of the early Goldfields.

Highlights of the collection include:
The Judge — equipment used to determine race outcomes before the era of photo finishes
The Chronograph — a rare 1903 timekeeping instrument once used to call official race times
The Hansom Cab — a meticulously restored turn-of-the-century cab once used to transport punters on race day
Melbourne Cup Connections — historic photographs and memorabilia celebrating KBRC’s ties to Australia’s greatest race
Together, these artefacts form a rich, tangible link to the past — preserving the moments, tools and traditions that defined racing in the early Goldfields.
